Cancer treatment can take a significant toll on your body, and one of the most important factors to consider during this challenging period is nutrition. A healthy, balanced diet can not only support your body through treatment but also aid in recovery. But what foods should you prioritise, and how can they help manage side effects from treatment?
A Plant-Based Diet: Your Best Bet for Cancer Recovery

A plant-based diet is widely recommended not only for reducing the risk of cancer but also for providing vital benefits during treatment. It’s important to consult your doctor and dietitian to confirm if this diet is suitable for your specific case.
A plant-based diet focuses on foods that come from plants, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds, and nuts. These foods are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients—naturally occurring compounds found in plants that may offer protective benefits to the body.
-Phytonutrients are especially beneficial, and foods like blueberries, red grapes, and eggplant, which are rich in these compounds, can be very helpful. The antioxidants found in these foods support your body by reducing inflammation and promoting overall health.
-Healthy fats, such as those in avocados, olive oil, and nuts, also play an important role in cancer recovery. These fats help reduce inflammation and support healing. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, as well as stone fruits like peaches and plums, are also excellent choices for their nutrient-dense content.
-While plant-based foods are essential, it’s also recommended to include lean animal proteins, such as chicken, turkey, and fish. Protein is critical during cancer treatment, as it helps preserve muscle mass, especially when the body is at risk of losing it.
Hydration: Vital for Cleansing and Recovery

Hydration is crucial, especially during chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. Proper hydration helps flush toxins from the body and supports recovery from side effects such as diarrhoea or vomiting.
Water is always a great choice, but liquids that are rich in electrolytes, such as coconut water, can offer additional benefits. Fruits with high water content, like watermelon and grapes, can also be a good source of hydration and nutrients.
To maintain proper hydration, aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of fluid each day. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should aim for approximately 80 ounces of fluid per day.
Tackling Loss of Appetite and Taste

During cancer treatment, many patients experience a loss of appetite, as well as changes in taste and smell, which can make it difficult to maintain a balanced diet. The key is to keep eating, even if it’s in small portions.
Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day is recommended, even if it’s just a few bites every couple of hours. This helps ensure you’re still getting the nutrients your body needs to recover.
If consuming fruits and vegetables is challenging, consider adding them to smoothies. High-protein smoothies made with Greek yogurt or protein powder, along with fruits and vegetables, can make it easier to meet nutritional needs while keeping the meal easy to consume.
Antioxidant supplements should be avoided, as they can interfere with treatments. Instead, focus on getting your antioxidants from whole foods.
Benefits of a Healthy Diet Beyond Treatment

The benefits of maintaining a healthy diet extend far beyond the treatment phase. A nutritious diet plays an important role in lowering the risk of cancer recurrence and improving overall health. After treatment, continuing a healthy eating plan can enhance your energy levels, improve your immune system, and support long-term well-being.
